France is after Russia and Ukraine the third largest country in Europe. The name France is derived from the Latin Francia, which meant as much as "country of the Franks," this name was given to the country by a Gemanic people who conquered the land during the 5th century, at the time of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It became a separate country in the 9th century.

All through history France played a big part in European and world events, suffered numerous crises, for example two world wars, political and social upheavals and the loss of a large empire in Indochina, Algeria, and West and Equatorial Africa. Despite of all these troubles France managed to grow to an important world supplier of agricultural and industrial products and a major partner in the EUROPEAN COMMUNITY (EC, or Common Market). With it’s population of 60,7 million, divided over an area of 547,030 km² (211,208 sq mi) France is a very interesting metropolitan perfect for your study or practical work experience.
